چکیده
Background The Nechako River Basin (NRB) is a large, regulated basin in north-central British Columbia, Canada that has been impacted by numerous landscape disturbances, including severe wildfire 2018. Aims aims of this study were to quantify the post-wildfire temporal and spatial extent contamination polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) both soils riverine sediments, identify primary sources PAHs watershed. Methods Soil samples collected at burned unburned sites 2018 2020 2021. Sediment three tributaries mainstem (i.e. main channel) from Samples analysed for parent PAHs. Key results PAH concentrations decreased soil 2021 but are not below found samples. Tributary sediment showed higher immediately post-fire relative River, years since, trend reversed. Conclusions persist terrestrial aquatic environments following wildfire, various quality guidelines. primarily derived wildfires, with some mixed downstream sites. Implications Wildfires an important source environmental environments.

Biodegradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Petroleum Contaminated Soils
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a class of potentially hazardous chemicals of environmental and health concern. PAHs are one of the most prevalent groups of contaminants found in soil. Biodegradation of complex hydrocarbon usually requires the cooperation of more than single specie. In this research biotreatment of PAH (phenanthrene) was studied in a solid-phase reactor using indigenou...
متن کاملContamination of rivers in Tianjin, China by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
Tianjin urban/industrial complex is highly polluted by some persistent organic pollutants. In this study, the levels of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were tested in sediment, water, and suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples in 10 rivers in Tianjin. The total concentration of 16 PAHs varied from 0.787 to 1943 microg/g dry weight in sediment, from 45.81 to 1272 ng/L in ...
متن کاملDetermination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in dungeness crabs (Cancer magister) near an aluminum smelter in Kitimat Arm, British Columbia, Canada.
An aluminum smelter situated at the head of Kitimat Arm (BC, Canada) has discharged polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into the receiving waters since 1954. The purpose of the present study was to examine the distribution of PAHs contaminants in dungeness crabs (Cancer magister) collected in Kitimat Arm and Douglas Channel (BC, Canada) by determining the concentrations of PAHs in the hepat...
متن کاملPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments and soils from oil exploration areas of the Niger Delta, Nigeria.
The distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments from rivers and canals adjoining some oil exploration sites in the Niger Delta and surface soils from host communities were examined. The concentrations of 28 target PAHs ranged from 65 to 331 ng/g (average: 168 ng/g) and from 24 to 120 ng/g (average: 80 ng/g) in the sediment and soil samples, respectively. Two-ring PAHs w...
متن کاملAvailability and Biotreatment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Sediments
This work applied new investigative techniques to assess the locations, distributions, and associations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in dredged harbor sediment. Dredged materials from the Milwaukee Confined Disposal Facility were collected and homogenized to provide sufficient sample for four month bioslurry treatment testing and for PAH analyses on various size and density fracti...
